New Ideas By Paula Anderson
Most ideas for businesses stem from solving a problem. As an entrepreneur, curiosity and creativity are two components needed to discover new ideas. Having an idea is not enough to make your product successful. It requires research, marketing and a testing method.
This is the ideation concept, according to Michelle Ferrier, associate professor in the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University, “ideation is the process of coming up with an idea.” As mentioned in the article, developing your ideas can be based on a brainstorming process using a whiteboard. However, a new concept that focuses on people requires a different approach. Stanford d. School Design Thinking Process developed six stages for this method. 1) Empathizing 2) Defining 3) Ideating 4) Prototyping 5) Testing 6) Sharing. In each phase, you develop and construct your idea based on having research data and information to support the success of your idea.
Another aspect for developing solutions, is the human-centered design (HCD) approach, which is the discipline of developing solutions in the service of people (Ferrier). When considering this model, there are three phases: Inspiration, Ideation and Implementation. As stated, the best products are the result of making lives better for people. Apple ® and Microsoft ® are good examples of this approach.
Entrepreneurs like Steve Jobs and Bill Gates utilized creativity along with technology to help make lives better with smartphones, office programs and operating systems. Understand that your product or service must be viable and it must solve the customer’s problem. Customer research is necessary to understand the customer’s need and solutions. This helps with developing a revenue and cost structure. Always remember it is what the customer needs and not the entrepreneur.
