From Talent to Structure: How NBIC’s Mighty Oak Pathway Gave Kathryn Swanton the Structure to Grow

Kathryn Swanton, CEO, MetKat Marketing, LLC

Kathryn Swanton has always been a creative. What she didn’t have, in the early days of Metkat Marketing, was a system.

“I am a creative,” she says plainly. “That level of organization and planning just isn’t my forte.”

That gap between vision and structure is where most small agencies stall. It’s also exactly where Kathryn’s story with NBIC begins.

The Leap

Kathryn founded Metkat Marketing LLC in 2019, but it was in late 2023 that she stepped into it full time, walking away from a marketing leadership role at a Nashville nonprofit to build something of her own. The decision came from a simple, uncomfortable truth about the industry she’d spent over 15 years mastering.

“If I didn’t do something different, I was going to be left behind,” she explains. Marketing was moving fast: paid advertising, influencer strategy, new platforms emerging by the month. Staying inside someone else’s org chart meant staying behind the curve. Going independent meant she could chase it.

Today, Metkat Marketing is a boutique agency built for the clients traditional firms overlook: nonprofits stretching tight grant dollars and small businesses of one or two people who need expert marketing support without the cost or commitment of a full-time hire. The scope stretches wide, from flyers and business cards to full fractional CMO engagements, but the mission stays constant. Give organizations access to the kind of strategic marketing power usually reserved for companies with in-house teams.

Finding the Framework

When Kathryn was ready to build her own business into something sustainable, NBIC was the first place she turned. She already knew the organization through her years in the nonprofit sector, and a conversation with CEO, Angela Crane-Jones about growth strategy and direction pointed her toward NBIC’s Framework and E-Myth programs.

The impact wasn’t in learning new marketing tactics. Kathryn already had those. It was in learning how to run a business like one.

“Since completing Framework and E-Myth with NBIC, I’ve been much more intentional about working on my business, not just in it,” she says. “Those courses helped me slow down, document processes, and think about Metkat Marketing as a scalable, values-driven organization, not just a solo effort.”

The shift went beyond paperwork. NBIC gave her a simple framework to assess direction, priorities, and goals, and a room full of peers to pressure-test her ideas against. She walked out with a stronger contract, clearer process, and defined scope of work: the unglamorous infrastructure that turns a freelancer into a firm.

“I’ve learned to step out of the day-to-day and focus on building systems that support long-term growth,” Kathryn reflects. “I’ve shifted my mindset from simply doing the work to intentionally shaping how Metkat Marketing grows and serves others.”

The Results

The numbers tell the rest of the story. Kathryn now runs a nearly full roster of clients, often referring prospective work out to her network because her calendar is full. Her client list has grown to include high-profile names like Coca-Cola and the Nashville Titans’ new stadium, work that puts a one-woman agency in the same rooms as firms with hundreds of employees.

“I’m a one-woman show producing content for major brands that agencies with 300 employees are also pitching,” she says. Technology, from Google Workspace to Grammarly, ChatGPT, Clockify, and the Adobe Suite, is part of what levels that playing field, letting her work from anywhere and deliver at a scale that used to require a full team.

Ninety percent of Metkat’s business now comes from referrals. Kathryn is being asked to speak more often, was named a 2025 Nashville Chamber NELA Finalist, and is heading into a rate increase she’s confident won’t cost her a single client.

What Growth Actually Looks Like

Kathryn describes her three years in business as a clear arc. Year one was about getting work, any work. Year two was about defining her niche and figuring out what kinds of projects she actually wanted. Year three is about selectivity: negotiating rates, setting contract terms, and building the kind of quality-first reputation that snowballs into referrals on its own.

She’s also expanding. Spotting a gap in her nonprofit client base, where event volunteers and interns are often asked to capture content without ever being taught how, Kathryn added a new service line: marketing training for nonprofit teams. It’s a natural extension of the E-Myth lesson that stuck with her most: build systems that outlast any one person, including yourself.

Her advice to entrepreneurs considering the leap she made is true to the mindset NBIC works to build: “Just get started. You’re going to get burned. Lean into it.” Some of Metkat’s strongest contract terms, including its termination policy and scope language, came directly out of early, painful lessons. She turned every one of them into infrastructure.

The Throughline

What Kathryn Swanton built is proof of something NBIC sees often and still finds remarkable every time. The creative talent was never the missing piece. It was the structure to carry it. Framework and E-Myth gave Kathryn the operational backbone to match her creative instincts, and three years later, Metkat Marketing is standing toe to toe with agencies twenty times its size.
