How NBIC Helped Army Veteran Daniel Gray Build a Thriving Childcare Business in Tennessee

Daniel Gray spent 18 years as a U.S. Army helicopter pilot. Problem-solving was not something he studied; it was something he did every day, in conditions where getting it wrong was not an option. As he approached retirement, he began thinking seriously about what came next.
The answer was closer than he expected.
“I have a six-year-old daughter and a two-year-old son. For the past six years, me and my wife have not been very pleased with the service we’ve received from daycares; whether that’s the curriculum, constant changeover in teachers, the teachers not having a very good relationship with us, or the technology.”
Daniel had been a consumer of childcare long enough to know what was missing. When he discovered Lightbridge Academy, a franchise preschool model built around the idea that a childcare center should function as an extension of the family; he did not just see a business opportunity. He saw the thing he had been wishing for existed.
“As a consumer, I wished I had a Lightbridge Academy in my community. I believe in the model, I believe in the need, and I just want to provide that capability to Mount Juliet parents.”
The vision was already set. What Daniel needed was the foundation to build it correctly. That is what brought him to the Nashville Business Incubation Center.

“I didn’t have a business degree or anything like that. My goal with the Foundations course was just to get my head wrapped around what I need to know as a business owner. What do I need to keep my eyes on daily? How do I get the business started?”
Through NBIC’s Foundations program, Daniel set up his business entity, connected with banking partners, learned what lenders actually need to see, and built his business plan from the ground up. That plan required him to identify his target demographics, complete a competitive analysis, and project his financials in detail. For a first-time business owner stepping into entrepreneurship after nearly two decades in the military, that process was transformative.
“The Foundations course is smart in what they call it. It really is the framework of what your business will be. Bankers need to see a business plan in order to fund you. It’s just a good starting point for any business.”
Daniel has also been intentional about how he runs his operations. From the start, he built Lightbridge Academy on the Microsoft 365 platform to manage communication, collaborate with the corporate franchise office, and run a seamless enrollment process; from the first family inquiry through to the CRM.
For a childcare business where a family’s first impression begins online, that kind of operational consistency is not a small thing. It is the signal that tells a parent whether this provider is worth trusting with their child.
Daniel is currently working with a developer to build out the Lightbridge Academy facility in Mount Juliet, Tennessee, with plans to run a targeted marketing campaign and build community relationships well before opening day. He plans to sponsor local police and fire events, join the Chamber of Commerce, and support youth sports organizations -because at Lightbridge Academy, community investment is not a strategy. It is the point.
When asked what he would tell another entrepreneur considering NBIC’s Foundations program, Daniel did not hesitate.
“Definitely do it. Even if you’re an entrepreneur with other businesses, there’s still something you haven’t thought about yet. You’re only going to get better at the business foundations.”
Daniel’s story is exactly why NBIC exists. Not every entrepreneur comes to the table with an MBA and a venture-backed idea. NBIC did not give Daniel Gray his direction; he came with that already. What the program gave him was the structure, knowledge, and financial preparation to execute at the level his vision deserves, and a stronger roadmap to get there.
Lightbridge Academy is coming to Mount Juliet, Tennessee; and Daniel Gray is ready.
